Printing Industries of America's Environmental Health and Safety Department has designed a guidance program that includes a printed guidance document and supplemental resources to further assist with compliance. These additional resources include standard references, training materials, sample programs, and references to additional resources.

In May 2012, OSHA’s revised Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) was aligned with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS).  The changes from the revised standard that will impact printers involve a requirement for vendors to use and issue a standardized 16 section Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instead of the previous format of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and for employers to use new container labels which will include pictograms, a signal word, as well as hazard and precautionary statements, and provide updated training for employees on the new SDS and labeling. The deadline for the update employee training has been set for December 1, 2013.

The Hazard Communication Guide for Printing Operations Version 2.0  is designed specifically for printing operations and provides information on the new Standard's requirements, important deadlines, and what is needed to develop and implement a Written Hazard Communication program.
